Word for Today: Wednesday, January 16, 2013

Hebrews 10:1-18 Superior Sacrifice.
Memory Verse: 10:12(KJV)
"But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God"
In our passage today, Christ is portrayed as the perfect sacrifice. The author continues the same subject we have been learning about in these past few days that animal sacrifices weren’t perfect enough to cleanse us hence Jesus death and sacrifice. The law was a picture, a shadow and it taught to prepare Israel for the real thing.

Jesus sacrifice on the cross was not only effective for the Jews but it was also effective for us. So far, we have seen that the sacrifices under the law were imperfect, shadows and copies of the real thing; hence worshippers were not made perfect or permanently cleansed.

Important points to note in this passage:
·The law is a shadow of the good things God promised. Verse 1
·Animal sacrifices cannot make one perfect or take away one’s sin. Verses 1 &4
·The annual sacrifices were just an annual reminder of sin. Verse 3
·Jesus blood is the superior blood that can wash away our sins completely Verse 4
·Christ offered himself and took the human body to save us permanently Verses 5-7 see also Psalm 40:6-8
·The law was set aside so that the new covenant which Jesus brought by his death and sacrifice can be establish. Verse 9
·Jesus died in obedience to the will of God in order to fulfil the requirements of the law Verses 9-10
·Jesus offered himself once for all. Verse 11-12
·Jesus sits at the right hand of God in heaven. Verse 12
·We have been made perfect through the sacrifice of Jesus. Verse 14
·Since we have been forgiven, there is no need for sacrifices. Jesus paid it all.Verse 18.

The fact that animal sacrifices were repeated annually meant they were a reminder of the people’s sins and not effective in cleansing them. They reminded those under the law that it wasn’t complete and that they had to do it every day, they were shadows and images.  No one can live under the shadow of a house. It will do you no good, it cannot protect you from rain or harsh weather conditions, you need a house.

If one is completely cured of sickness, there is no need for hospitals or medications. Going to the hospital is just a reminder that one is sick and needs medical attention.

I remember when I used to have constant heartburn and I went to the doctor’s. He gave me some medicines that I can use to suppress the pain. You see, those medicines couldn’t completely cure me they were just there to help me whenever I had the heartburn. That was how the animal sacrifices were to the people; they couldn’t completely cleanse the people. They could only help them for a while before another sacrifice is made.

The law never promised Joy or total deliverance. In fact people under the law were immediately punished for their sins but Jesus died to give us grace and mercy. Now, we can immediately confess our sins without anyone doing it for us and we will be forgiven.

When Jesus cried it was finished. It indeed was finished. Glory to God, I don’t have to offer yearly sacrifices. Christ sacrificial act is part of God’s new covenant with the people. He took away the first that he may establish a second of which we are sanctified once and for all. Now we have boldness by the blood of Jesus to enter God’s presence.

Once you confess and forsake you sins, it is forgiven forever. No need confessing it all over again. Hallelujah to my great High Priest who not only took away my sins completely but also intercedes on my behalf.

As you go on your daily activities, remember this popular hymn and sing it all day.
What can wash away my sins? Nothing but the blood of Jesus
What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus
Oh precious is that flow that makes me white as snow
No other fount I know
Nothing but the blood of Jesus. Amen
