Hebrews 2: 10-18 We are Children of God

Memory Verse: Hebrew 2:12(KJV)

Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee.

God’s plan for man was to bring him to glory but this was something God couldn't do because man’s sin hindered that plan. There was a need for a perfect sacrifice to ensure that God’s plan for man is actualized. A penalty had to be paid for us to be united with God.

God’s purpose was to bring many sons to him and he could only do it through the death of Christ. Prior to Jesus death, animals were offered yearly but they were not perfect enough to save man, because if they were perfect there wouldn't be any need for a yearly sacrifice. Jesus was made perfect through suffering that is, He perfected the works of our salvation through the shedding of blood by becoming the sacrificial lamb. Because we are one with Christ, He is not ashamed to call us his sons. We would study more of Jesus being the perfect sacrifice in Hebrews chapter 9 and 10 later in this month.

Jesus paid the price once and for all, His humiliation and death brought glory and honour to Him, gave us our salvation and made us united with God. We are now joint heir with Jesus (Rom8:17) therefore we are one big happy family☺. He was born under the law to redeem those born under the law. He gave us freedom from the law now we look with faith on him.

Christ is the first born and only those who are sons of God can be heirs to his inheritance. Mind you our inheritance is in heaven. Believers are children of God because we have accepted Jesus as our saviour. John 1:12.

Jesus as a spirit didn't need any support but as a man he needed the support of God, because becoming man means he was limited hence the quote “I will put my trust in him”. This was a psalm David recited when he was in trouble, and it was only God he could trust to deliver him. We became children of God through Christ death, and quotations from Psalm 22:22 and Isaiah 8:18 confirm that. We know that the book of Isaiah contains prophecies about the birth, suffering and death of Jesus and Psalm 22 is a Psalm of the cross. In this psalm you will find the words Jesus said while he was on the cross.

The devil is said to have the power of death and He draws men to sin. We are no longer the slaves of the devil but we are the children of God through Christ’s suffering.

Jesus didn’t take the nature of angels because He wasn't destined to save them. Yes, there are fallen angels but Jesus was never destined to die for them. He was destined to die for man, hence his coming as fresh so that He could experience the suffering of man.

Jesus sympathises with us, He knows the effect of sin on humanity because he experienced the life of man. He understands us not because He is God but because He became man and knows exactly what we are going through. It is so unfortunate that some of us try to fight the battle alone when we have Jesus to do it on our behalf.
